The "what are you wearing" text

It all started with the, “what are you wearing” text. That was invented of course after the, “what are you wearing” phone call and probably the, “what are you wearing” letter. From the dawn of time, women have been asking each other what they are wearing to any given event to gage what we nowadays call, the vibes. Do you catch yourself asking this? I know I do at 22. I know my mum and her friends ask each other this in their 60s. It’s a timeless question. This is because there is a massive difference between what one would wear to grab drinks after work on a weekday and grab drinks on Saturday night. Take the term casual for example. There is a distinction between a true casual and a more upscale casual, which can be seen through subtle nuances. A true casual is sneakers, a pair of jeans, and a fitted tee shirt. You swap out the jeans for trousers or sneakers for kitten heels and you officially have yourself upscale casual. No one likes the feeling of being the casual friend walking into a room of an upscale casual crowd. My mum grew up in the United Kingdom, and is going to a school reunion very soon. A few days ago, one simple text sparked a chain of responses that varied from, “Oh, I don’t know, good question! What is everyone else wearing?” to “Honestly, what does it matter”. In reality, maybe we are making it too deep. But we make a lot of things deep, and I believe it is one of the very things that bonds us as women.
